Here's my situation. I recently bought some 4.1 speakers. However, my mx300 sound card doesn't work properly under win2k, so i just got a new hercules fortissimo 2 today. I put that in my computer and all is nice. I also am using the newest drivers from the hercules website. I have a thx test on my T2 ultimate edition dvd, but powerdvd and windvd don't like it much. Both are supposed to be able to downmix 5.1 to 4.1 (they should phantom the center channel b/t the front left and right).

The Avia Basic System Setup DVD by Ovation Multimedia is an easy-to-use home theater calibration tool containing the core video and audio test signals. With Avia Basic, you'll be able to set the best contrast ratio, the most accurate colors, and the best resolution your screen can produce. Avia guide to home theater (video 1999) imdb, this dvd is designed to teach you about home theater and help you choose components and set them up for maximum performance it mainly consists of test patterns and tones for.

However, the tests don't work. In powerdvd, the left test signal comes from the left front speaker. Then it switches to left plus phantom center. Then the center signal goes to the right speaker. The rest after that don't output anything. In windvd, the left, center, and right test signals work fine, except nothing comes out the back when it does the surround signals. I've tried every possible setting in both windvd and powerdvd and i've come up with squat.

• Cut a hat out of construction paper. Wintercraft mask pdf letter. Then cut the hat shape you want. We found that it worked best to hold the piece of construction paper horizontally and fold it in half. This allows you to get the hat even, and if you hold the paper horizontally the hat isn't too tall (holding the paper vertically results in a floppy hat).

Even when i enable 6 channel analog in powerdvd, the tests don't work. However, when watching a dvd, dialog is considerably lower. Also, when set to 4 speakers in powerdvd, it sound like there's dialog coming out the back. Far cry download for free As you can tell, i'm very frustrated with it all b/c i got new speakers and a new sound card and it all doesn't seem to work right. To top it all off, the digital optical out doesn't seem to work right b/c there's a constant low level noise in the signal (the red light's always on). I posted another thread but have not gotten any response yet.

If you could please send me the.vob of your tests, i'd really appreciate it. I don't have an ftp server available. Is there any other way i could get it from you? Thanks LarryJoe.

That's what I needed. Now to continue with the frustration.

The file that LarryJoe sent me was the 5.1 channel identification chapter of AVIA. It cycles through all the channels including the LFE, one at a time. When I use PowerDVD, LF comes from LF, center comes from both LF and RF (phantom), and RF comes from RF.

The weird thing is, those three channels get mirrored to the back two speakers. There is no sound at all for the surround announcements. The LFE announcement comes from the left channel like the test said it would, but no bass from my sub comes out. This occurs when I use every possible setting combination in PowerDVD except Dolby Headphone. This works in the sense that the channel announcements come from the right place spatially, but it is just a simulation (since Dolby Headphone simulates 5.1 with just two channels). This is nice and all, but I'd really like discrete channels, and not a simulation.

On to Intervideo's WinDVD. Again, LF, center, and RF come out the fronts like they are supposed to, but they again are mirrored to the back.

Then there is no sound at all for the surround announcements. When the LFE is announced, it comes from the left channel and my sub does put out the low bass tone (unlike PowerDVD). Again, with Dolby Headphone, the placements are right, but it's still a simulation. Concerning Dolby Headphone, what I mean by simulation is that each speaker puts out some sound even when they shouldn't in a true 5.1 or 4.1 system.

It's all simulated to appear so. I was under the impression that both PowerDVD and WinDVD were able to downmix Dolby 5.1 into 4.1, but it seems that it can't. Can anyone help?

It really sounds like drivers to me. There are not many soundcards that can get this right yet under XP. I assume 2K still is quirky too. I am using the Santa Cruz and it works perfectly. The only other thing I think of is that things aren't plugged in properly, or you are not using the prper cables or connectors.
